Sony Xperia Z5 Announced: The First 4K Smartphone

As you may have known, or heard over the past couple of days #IFA15 has been taking place in Berlin with a whole host of new devices and products launched. One of these so called new devices that has been announced is the Sony Xperia Z5 – and not just one!

The range includes the Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact and the Xperia Z5 Premium.

Xperia Z5

This is the standard option, and probably the one most of us are accustomed to using or hearing about. It will sport a 5.2-inch full HD IPS displays with a 1080 x 1920 resolution. It will ship with Android 5.1 Lollipop running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor on a 64-bit architecture. A dual SIM option will also be available in some places.

Camera-wise the Z5 will pack 23-megapixels on the back, with the capability of recording in 4K, while over on the front you’ll have a 5-megapixel shooter. 3GB RAM and 32GB of storage come as standard, while this can be upgraded to 200GB through a microSD slot.

Colour variations include white, green, graphite black and gold.

Xperia Z5 Compact

The compact edition also includes a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core 64-bit processor, and again includes the same 23-megapixel camera. The major difference between the Z5 “Standard” and the Compact edition is the 4.6-inch display which comes on this model with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels.

On the compact you will still receive 32GB of internal storage, which can be expanded up to 200GB through the MicroSD card slot, however this time you’ll receive 2GB of RAM. Again it will ship running Android 5.1 Lollipop.

Colour variations include white, yellow, coral and graphite black.

Xperia Z5 Premium

The most impressive handset of the range will feature a 5.5-inch 4K IPS display with a resolution of 3840 x 2160. Much like the standard edition it will house a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core 64-bit processor with the 3GB of RAM, shipping with Android 5.1 Lollipop installed.

A 23-megapixel rear shooter will ensure crisp images and allow users to capture 4K videos. To add to the premium theme Sony will be offering the device in black, chrome or gold.

All editions of the Z5 will have chemically tempered glass with an anti-fingerprint coating applied.

When will they launch?

Sony announced that the Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact will be available to purchase in October, with the Z5 Premium following shortly after in November. As of yet, no prices have been announced.
