Many of us would find it difficult to go even a few days without our smartphones, whether it’s updating social networks or having a means of emergency contacting somebody. They’ve become increasingly expensive and it pays to look after them. The easiest and most simple way to do this is by means of a protective case.

The Swedish manufacturer Thule is known worldwide for their robust outdoor products including backpacks, rooftop boxes and also gadget cases. The Thule Atmos X3 is a simple, minimalist smartphone case which fits the iPhone 5/5s as well as a couple more devices. While it doesn’t include any extras such as a kickstand the Atmos X3 simply works.

Thule Atmos X3 Inside

The case is manufactured from Thule’s brand new bi-component armor material which offers excellent protection properties whilst keeping the case thin and light weighing in at just 20g. Thule have also customised the corners of the case which they have called “shock-stop” corners. They are meant to absorb any impact and protect your device from sustaining any damage. We decided to test this out for ourselves and carried out a series of drop tests, dropping our device directly onto the corners. We can confirm that the 2m drop test statement printed on the packaging is true and our device was completely fine when dropped from this height.

Thule Atmos X3 Back

Although the X3 doesn’t have any sort of screen protector the case has a raised lip which does go someway to protecting the glass screen. Not only this but when you place your phone face down the lip will prevent the glass from touching the surface and should prevent any scratches. No functionality is lost with the case installed, and whilst the volume buttons are protected by the case they are still very responsive when pressed.

Verdict

Available in three colour combinations the Thule Atmos X3 is a great case for the iPhone 5/5s. Whilst many would see it as lacking features such as a kickstand or screen protector, the materials used to manufacture this case alone set it apart. The only slight downside we can find with this case is the price which currently sits at over £25.
